Okay, here’s the rub: I’m not really a C- writer, and I don’t have any classes to write for. In fact, I finished my Ph.D. in 2001, so I’m pretty much done getting grades on my writing. I have, however, been on both sides of the academic duel—student vs. teacher—so my perspective is at least well balanced. My advice?—If you are thinking about having someone else write a paper for you, don’t do it. You will only be cheating yourself.

But are you the only one cheating when you get a professional to write your essay? No, emphatically, no. These essay writing professionals are supplying materials that they know will be used to commit plagiarism. It’s like selling machineguns to guerrilla “freedom fighters” and claiming you had nothing to do with the bloodshed. If these cheap writing companies were against plagiarism, why would they offer admission essays, research papers, book reports, theses, dissertations, coursework essays, art critiques, and poetry analyses? (By the way, this is the correct way to string together a number of plurals.) All of these works assume not just originality, but a certain degree of subject mastery. There is no way to legitimately use the work of a professional essayist in preparing such written works, at least not without citing them as a source (and we all know how far that pig flies). Professional essay writing is simply a dishonest industry that should not be supported.

Writing is an essential skill in life, one that can literally bridge the gap between reaching a promotional ceiling and rising to the top in a company. That "professionally written” essay will not and cannot be your edge. What will you do when you get out into the real world, where writing skills can’t be easily fudged? Your edge will be in knowing how to craft sentences into paragraphs, all organized into a logical structure that flawlessly conveys a message.

The most important deterrent to honest people is a fear of losing self-respect. Positive self-perception doesn't survive too many falls from grace. Knowing that you are a fraud creates some serious psychological fallout that you will have to deal with—all on your own, by the way, unless you want to confess to your friends or family members that you cheated.

I’ve got some really good advice for anyone leaning toward hiring an essay writing service.  Keep your honor and save your money. Learn how to express your ideas in writing—I’ll even point you in the right direction. Spend some time studying the grammar and usage materials and the essay writing advice on tina-blue.com and I promise that your writing will improve to many times the skill level demonstrated by these so called essay writing professionals. Put some effort into critical thinking about your writing and your subjects. Competent writing is not an innate talent accessible only to prodigies. It can be learned by anyone of reasonable intelligence and improved upon with effort and persistence.

Tina Blue has produced a set of clearly written materials that are easy to understand and assimilate. I use her resources regularly, and she will even answer questions for you if you write her nicely. Tina was my undergraduate English instructor at The University of Kansas, and she taught me most of what I know about grammar and usage. Her new website even features instructional videos on writing.  Okay, then, no excuses. Learn to write as a gift to yourself, and say no to plagiarism.
